eBay, the online retail firm has to pay three million dollars as a substantial fine. Why? According to a case filed on 11 January 2024, employees of the company have been accused of inappropriate behaviour, harassment and indulging in unsettling activities. The employees allegedly sent live spiders, cockroaches and other disturbing items to a Massachusetts couple.
The eBay employees went to great lengths to intimidate the Massachusetts couple, David and Ina Steiner.
The couple ran an online newsletter named EcommerceBytes, which drew the ire of eBay executives due to its critical coverage of the company.
eBay is accused of stalking, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering by the Justice Department. The criminal charges filed against the company mark the seriousness of this harassment incident.
The company has entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the US Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts.
As per the terms of the agreement, the criminal charges against the company may get dismissed if they fall under certain conditions. This agreement further provides eBay with an opportunity to showcase its commitment to ethical conduct and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
Josh Levy, the Massachusetts couple’s attorney, criticised the criminal actions of eBay. He further shed light on the emotional and mental distress it caused the couple. The firm’s actions were deliberately intended to stifle critical reporting and safeguard its brand reputation.
