Bengaluru may have to allow employees to work from home because it is facing a major water crisis. The city is home to about 15 lakh employees working for the information technology (IT) sector alone. If these employees are allowed to work from home, even temporarily, the pressure on the city’s resources will be reduced to a significant extent. Therefore, IT-sector staff and experts are of the view that work-from-home arrangements for a year will go a long way in helping tackle the crisis. They have been requesting the Government of Karnataka to give serious thought to the issue, as it will help conserve water.
This suggestion is worth considering, for Bengaluru houses some of the biggest IT companies, including Infosys, Wipro, TCS, Accenture, Cisco, Mindtree, IBM, Oracle, Capgemini and Cognizant. A good percentage of the employees working in these firms come from outside Bengaluru. Many belong to tier-2 and tier-3 cities as well.
It is pertinent to mention here that with the IT sector growing in leaps and bounds, the population of Bengaluru has also grown tremendously. While its population was about 25 lakhs about five decades ago, the figure has now cross one crore. The increasing density of population has naturally put a lot of pressure on its sources of water. While it requires at least 2,600 million litres daily, the city is falling short of almost 500 million litres of water a day.

What about the rent paid by IT companies will Govt share and other difficulty face by company by WFH. Govt declares freebies for all unwanted atleast at the hour of crisis Govt should do the needful
Thoo, because of managers and leaders like you people resign, only thinking about rents and leases…no long term vision at all
This is not time to blame each other in any ways… It’s about saving water.. I would suggest do not narrow your mind.
Let’s think like Sadguru.
This was predicted well before this situation. Nature has been signalling in many ways but we are not taking it seriously…
Working from office will increase the usage and wastage 80% more than what it is now… Govt is not bothered.. MNC’s are not bothered….. Where is the question of social responsibility
Is the rent paid by employees ?whether employees come to office or don’t come rent has to be paid.
Selfish Companies underpay employees less than 5% of their profits to employees, while they make hundreds to thousands of dollars working us like dogs, so u don’t have to worry about so called “difficulties“ which they face.
This is the problem in Bangalore, why it companies only focused there, they can open office in tier2 cities as well. Which benifits all. Bangalore will not be crowded and people can stay close to their natives as well. The main problem here is the willingness of all companies.
Did you ask the same question to Govt. during Covid? Why were you not concernd about rent then? You are thinking about companies paying rent but tommo if an employee dies company will not think and hire a new person in place the very next day.
Not just water. The government in Bangalore (which is comprised of people who don’t live in this city) has mismanaged this piece of land in multiple ways.
You just need to visit this city once to know that it barely has any traits of a city.
It won’t be long before people give up on Bangalore as a feasible option for a better life.
I agree
WFH option is good
It will be good if employees allowed to wfh permanently, however in certain situations like a meetings training employer should call to office.
I agree that all IT companies give employees to do WFH option, will definitely water crisis along with traffic problem will solve.
I request all IT companies should say employees to work from their own states so that productivity will also increase. And employees have the opportunity to stay with their family to.
